Why Pronouns Matter - Transgender Day of Remembrance

November 20th, also known as Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) began as a day to recognize the life of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. Advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith organized a vigil to honor the memory of Rita and all the transgender people that were killed before and after her.

On this Transgender Day of Remembrance, we look at the increased levels of violence that transgender individuals may deal with and why recognition of pronouns is so essential.
