Small Business Saturday at the Feminist Magic Market
As the last Feminist Magic Market of the year approaches and holiday shopping ramps up, I took time to visualize data around holiday shopping and women-owned businesses in the United States.
I sat down with Danielle Hein, founder of Earth Goddess Botanicals and co-founder and organizer of the Feminist Magic Market, a quarterly market held in Park Circle, North Charleston, SC, before the final Feminist Magic Market of 2022. (Learn more about the event here)
But first, let’s start with the basics. Each year, Americans spend billions of dollars shopping for the Holidays. Each year Holiday Sales continue to grow.
In some cases Holiday Shopping can account for up to 30% of a store’s annual retail sales. Each year e-commerce revenue continues to outgrow the revenue of small businesses. While many small businesses have moved online, it can be difficult to compete with large retailers who can offer lower prices and free shipping more easily.
Of all the businesses in the United States, 12.9 million or 42% are owned by women. Of those Women Owned businesses, just over half are owned by white women. Black women own 21% of women-owned businesses and latino women own 18% of women-owned businesses.
Danielle’s businesses, Earth Goddess Botanicals and the Feminist Magic Market are 2 of 32.5 million small businesses in the United States.
Inspired by her mother’s business, The Old White House, Danielle knew she was destined for entrepreneurship from a young age.
Each market gets bigger and better. The market features a growing group of vendors and shoppers. The final Feminist Magic Market, celebrating Small Business Saturday, will take place on Saturday, November 26th, in Park Circle, North Charleston, SC.
